What is a Chrismon?

A Chrismon is a form of Christian artwork specifically intended to symbolize aspects of the Person, life or ministry of Jesus Christ and the life, ministry or history of the Christian Church through a single image, emblem or monogram. The term "Chrismon" comes from the Latin phrase "Christi Monogramma", meaning "monogram of Christ".

Why do I make stained glass Chrismons?

I was led to consider stained glass my ministry one Saturday night at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster.  We were getting ready to start a Faith in Action program based on the Parable of the Talents.  At each Sunday service, individuals or families were offered $10. They were to use their talents to multiply God’s $10. Several months later we were to bring back all the money we made as a gift to God. I was thinking of making stained glass Chrismons but I just could not find any good patterns.  During Pentecost, which was in June that year, we decided to attend the Saturday evening service. Usually it was a small service but that night, unknown to us, it was Confirmation. The service was pretty crowded and a lot of people were there that did not usually attend Grace. After the service the sanctuary was pretty messy with bulletins left behind, so Suzanne and I decided to help the ushers clean up. As I was picking bulletins out of the hymnal racks on the back of the pews and what did I find?  Someone left behind a printout from the internet about Chrismons. There were pictures of a 100 Chrismons with a Bible verse for each one and the internet site address.  I took that as a sign that I should make Chrismons for the Faith in Action program.  My original investment of $10 returned $585 and I have been making Chrismons ever since.

Celtic Cross
The Irish Catholic priest will have no hesitation telling you that the circle of the Celtic Cross is a symbol of eternity that emphasizes the endlessness of God’s love as shown through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. That is unless he says the circle is a halo. He may go on to explain that the crucifixion is important not just as an event at a certain point in time but, as the circle symbolizes, as the unending mystery of how through the crucifixion and resurrection Christ continues to offer the hope of salvation to the faithful throughout all time.
